Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, Minot, ND, was the recipient of a $5,400 Community Investment Grant from local energy transportation company, Enbridge. Funds donated to the Ranch will support Transition to Life: Finding my Future Self, an ongoing program at Dakota Memorial School, Minot, the accredited on-campus school of Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch.
Almost all Dakota Memorial School (DMS) students face unique challenges when transitioning from one environment to another. They typically come from home/school environments with little to no support; and they have rarely, if ever, experienced success in school or at home. Many of our students are the first in their families to graduate high school and their families have placed very little emphasis on education. They also haven't had the opportunity to discuss future needs and plans, sometimes because no one believed in them enough to realize they had choices.
Through a weekly social skills/transition group and individual consultation for each student, "Transition to life: Finding My Future Self" will guide students through questions like, "How will I succeed in the new school or work environment using the coping skills I learned at DMS?" "What options do I have for future schooling and/or work?" "What do I want to do with the rest of my life?" "What kind of support do I need from my family, friends, and/or community?"
The additional support we can provide, thanks to Enbridge, will help our kids transition from a residential school environment to a public school or work environment and prepare them to be successful in the community.
Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch is a Christian residential treatment and education center for children and their families. We help the most troubled, complicated, and amazing kids by providing best-in-class psychiatric therapy and trauma-informed care, where we look kids in the eye, walk with them, and help them become their best selves. In addition to Residential Treatment Facilities in Fargo, Bismarck, and Minot, the Ranch provides Outpatient Psychiatric and Psychological Services, and Spiritual Life Programs. Our on-campus school, Dakota Memorial School (DMS), provides a personalized education for kids who have psychiatric, behavioral, and trauma issues.
