"Primary"

When Gideon came to Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, he was, like many children, quiet and withdrawn. It isn’t that way with all children when they arrive, but many spend their early days with us observing and acclimating. It is a new place with new expectations, new people, new food, new guidelines. Gideon was watching and simply figuring things out.

To help children with the transition, we assign each a “primary staff.” Think of that residential treatment specialist as the child’s mentor/buddy. Trauma-sensitive care is only effective when we are building relationships. The child's primary works to build trust, explain all aspects of the Ranch, and most of all, listen.

Gideon’s primary is Ty’Rhae. Ty’Rhae is a patient, energetic, smiling man with the ability to really listen. He hasn’t been at the Ranch for long, but he certainly understands these children.

In the process of getting to know Gideon, Ty’Rhae learned that Gideon doesn’t like being touched, loves football, and when he is happy, he would like other people to “just not ruin it.” Ty’Rhae asked him about any goals that would excite and motivate him.

Gideon answered quickly. “I want to get closer to God and get out of my shell so I can attend Chapel.”

What a great way to start the healing journey! And, we’ll work in a little football, too.

Please keep our children, like Gideon, and staff, like Ty’Rhae, in your prayers.

In His love,

Joy Ryan, President/CEO
Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch
