When I Am...

When I Am...

When I Am...

I know I write a lot about the complexity of the lives of the children who come to Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch. The stories are all true. These kids have endured so much.

Sometimes, the simplicity of their needs is heartbreaking.

Once children have settled in, we ask them to complete an “All About Me” sheet. They tell us their favorite color and food. They draw a picture of themselves and tell us about their favorite place in the world. These questions help us connect with the child and make sure we have a starting point for understanding them. Basic icebreaker kind of stuff.

Other questions help us learn more about temperament. “You will know when I am sad when ___________?” “You will know when I am frustrated when ________?”

And what can we do… “When I am sad, I would appreciate it if you ___________.” “When I am frustrated, I would appreciate it if you __________.”

For Marci, the answer to this question was quick.

“When I am happy, I would appreciate it if you “Talk to me and be proud of me.”

I am pretty sure Marci has never had that. But every child should. She will get that now.

Please keep the children and staff at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in your prayers.

His love,

Joy Ryan, President/CEO
