One of our kids is going home today.
Of course, I am thrilled. We are here to “help at-risk kids and their families succeed in the name of Christ.” Part of succeeding is being able to live with a family. No child should grow up at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch.
This family has done a lot of work to come back together. Dad had his own horror stories as a child and grew up largely in foster care. Mom has terminal addiction issues and has not been part of her daughter’s life for years. Dad has worked hard to overcome his own behaviors so he can be a better parent.
And, boy, has this kid worked. She fully engaged in school, treatment, and spiritual life, making the most of everything the Ranch had to offer. She learned coping skills and occupational therapy tools for calming and anger reduction and became a role model for children just arriving at the Ranch.
Yesterday, as is custom when a child leaves our care, Chaplain Jones took a moment during chapel to present her with a plaque with a specially selected Bible verse. There were lots of tears in the crowd as people cherished the moment.
Today, I got to visit with her for a minute. Of course, nerves are running high, but she has so much hope. I said, “You’ve worked really, really hard and I’m proud of you. I will keep you in my prayers.”
The response from this child who has overcome so much? “I’ll pray for you, too. And everybody here. And always travel safely!”
Yup.
“I’ll pray for you, too.”
These kids are truly precious. Please keep them and our staff in your prayers.
In His love,
Joy Ryan, President/CEO
Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch
You can raise funds for your congregation, Bible study group, women's group, or youth group, AND provide hope and healing for a child at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, by hosting a Honey Sunday.
For decades, congregations across the United States have held Honey Sundays. We invite you to join them — and bring God’s love to a child by organizing a Honey Sunday fundraiser.
Honey Sunday keeps the focus on the work of our Lord, your church, and the Ranch. And we make it easy for you to do by sending everything you’ll need. We'll even mail the honey directly to people's homes, so you don't have to worry about distribution.
